Planning Successful Waterfronts

An official map establishes clear boundaries for private and public development.

Cities and towns have always had the right to map and plat any and all land within their own boundaries. A municipality's official map profoundly affects its waterfront because it determines the location of streets (the public rights-of-way) and public parks. The official map can thus establish the framework for access to the waterfront and clear boundaries for where private and public development can take place.
