New York Times Chatter Section, , 1998 A Future White ElephantWhen the shipping and manufacturing industries left, the only thing sparing Hoboken from the fate of its shabbier neighbors was an influx of artists and then young professionals. This has become in some ways a Frankenstein's monster, with an entire economy revolving around entertaining and housing these people. The proposed arena is simply a larger version of the many schemes we've seen in the chase for a highly sought-out clientele, while many other aspects of the town have been neglected. Hoboken's cachet will not last forever. The proposed arena - built over a historically significant station that should be restored, not obscured - could become a gigantic white elephant.
