Hoboken Reporter, August 13, 2000 More Roads are not the solution to transportion problemsDear Editor: Joe Barry is right in one respect, the majority of residents who are moving to the Shipyard area aren't driving to work. This is news? Most people who move to Hoboken do so precisely because of its proximity to Manhattan. It's the bus and PATH that they rely on. But that's a problem, because they're packing into already overcrowded buses and trains that are going through already backed-up and congested tunnels. So what's Joe Barry's solution? He doesn't have one. Except build more roads that lead to the same overcrowded tunnels. This is not a solution. This is asinine. But let's be fair; we shouldn't expect Mr. Barry or any builder, to solve Hudson County's transportation problems. It's not his responsibility. That said, why would we want to approve developments and grant variances that only increase an already dense population and worsen the problem?
