A Plan for the Hoboken Waterfront

In July of 1990, the Coalition for a Better Waterfront won a stunning public referendum election defeating a massive waterfront development proposal by the City of Hoboken and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Subsequently, the Coalition developed this plan and model for the entire Hoboken waterfront. This plan includes a mapped and platted waterfront with new blocks that replicate the old and a continuous, linear park running the length of Hoboken's riverfront. New development (depicted by the lighter buildings and trees) is on a scale that is compatible with what currently exists in Hoboken. After a two-year planning effort involving considerable public participation, the City of Hoboken in 1995 adopted most of these features at its south waterfront. The public park at Hoboken's south waterfront is currently under construction.
