April 1999 Let Them Develop In Weehawken, Hoboken and West New York
Secaucus -- A $5 million bond ordinance to preserve open space for recreation and prevent over development was unanimously introduced at Tuesday's council Meeting. Town officials are interested in preventing the development of 14 acres in the north of town, where developers are considering construction of a 13-story, 42-unit condominium tower. Mayor Anthony E. Just said the property may be obtained by eminent domain, a municipal condemnation of the property purchased at fair market value from the owners. "We're waiting to see if Gov. Whitman will give us aid," said Just, who said the passage of the state referendum question to preserve open spaces on last November's ballot was behind the move. "Development causes strains on the school system, town services and creates traffic. This saves the town money in the future. . . . Let them develop in Weehawken, Hoboken or West New York."
